A letter from Joan of Constantinople, Countess of Flanders (1220, May 15)

Translated letter:

Joan, countess of Flanders and of Hainaut, to the bailiff and aldermen of Oudenarde, greeting. May you know that I grant and consider it favorable that those from the hospice (hospitale) of Oudenarde should build an upper story in their house, where produce may be sold for their use, as it will have seemed best to them to arrange it. Granted at Courtrai, Friday before Pentecost, in the year of the Lord 1220.(1)

J[ohanna], Flandrie et Hain[onie] comitissa, ballivo et scabinis de Alden[ardo] salutem. Noveritis quod concedo et gratum habeo, quod illi de hospitale de Alden[ardo] faciant solarium in doma sua, ubi segetes vendantur ad usus suos, sicut melius viderint expedire. Datum Curtraci, feria sexta ante Pentecostem, anno Domini M° vigesimo.

The countess grants the hospice of Oudenarde permission to add an upper story to sell produce.
