A letter from William Gaucefred

Translated letter:

This is the agreement which was made between lord Raymond, count of Barcelona, and lady Dulcia, countess, and William Gaucefred.  For said William agreed to said count and countess that he would be faithful to them by right faith without any deception in their lives and all the members they hold in their bodies and all that honor which they have today and will, God granting, acquire in the future, in the manner that a man should be to his higher lords.  Also, he agreed to them that he would be their aid by right faith, without any deception, to hold and have and defend and wage war with them and without them, as he best could, against all men or women who would want to take [rest missing]

Hec est conveniencia que est facta inter domnum Raimundum, Barchinonensem comitem, et domnam Dulciam comitissam, et Guilelmus Gaucefrdi.  Convenit, namque, predictus Guilelmus iam dictis comiti et comitisse ut sit fidelis per directam fidem sine ullo engan de vita illorum et de omnibus membris que se tenent in corporibus illorum et de toto illo honore quem hodie habent et in antea adquisierint, Deo dante, tali modo sicut homo debet esse ad suos meliores seniores.  Item, convenit ad eos ut sit eis adiutor per directam fidem, sine illorum engan, ad tenere et ad habere et ad deffendere et ad guerreiare cum illis et sine illis, sicut melius potuerit, contra cunctos homines vel feminas qui voluerint tollere (truncado)

Agreement between the count and countess and William Gaucefred.  This incomplete paragraph follows the agreement by Gaucefred Baston with Raymond’s grandfather and countess Almodis for Cerviano and Pubal, #486, dated 1065.
