Translated letter:

Document of homage which Marie, lady of Montpellier, daughter of the late William of Montpellier, son of the late duchess Mathilda, offered to William, bishop of Maguelonne.  – “This was done at Montpelliers in the church of St. Mary in the 1208th  year of the Lord’s incarnation, on the ides of April, in the presence and witness of B. of St. Gervais, provost of Maguelonne, P. of Aigrefeuille, P. of Lunel, archdeacon of Maguelonne ... Bertrand, knight of Vallanches, Berengar Lanbert, John of Latis ... and many others, and Hugh Lawrence, notary who wrote this, as by order of [both] parties.”

Original letter:

Instrumentum homagii quod Maria domina Montispessulani, filia quondam Guillermi Montispessulani, filii quondam Mathildis duchissae, Guillelmo Magalonensi episcopo praestiat.  – “Hoc fuit factum apud Montempessulanum in ecclesia Beate Marie anno Dominice incarnationis millesimo ducentesimo octavo, ydus aprilis, in presencia et testimonio B. de Sancto Gervasio Magalonensis prepositi, P. de Agrifolio, P. de Lunello Magalonensis archidiaconi ..., Bertrandi de Vallanches militis, Berengarii Lauberti, Johannis de Latis ... aliorum quamplurium, et Ugonis Laurencii notarii qui mandato parcium hoc scripsit.”

Historical context:

Marie swore homage to the bishop, recorded in a document the original of which is no longer in the Layettes, but was briefly summarized by the editor from a copy signed by two church notaries.
