A letter from Honorius III, pope (1217)

Translated letter:

trans: To B[erengaria] formerly queen of the English. That she might punish certain clerics who, having put aside the tonsure and habit, transgressed, and in order to escape punishment, resumed them. Dated at Ferentini.

Original letter:

B[erengariae] quondam Anglorum regine. Ut possit punire clericos quosdam qui, abiectis tonsura et habitu, delinquebant, et ut punitionem effugerent eadem resumebant. Ferentini.

Historical context:

Honorius supports the queen in her struggle with delinquent clerics, who have been living secular lives, but resume the tonsure in order to avoid their secular responsibilities, such as taxes (cf. Horoy 2.192, 193, Epistolae, 775.html). This is a summary.
