Biography

Matilda was the daughter of Hugo II, Duke of Burgundy, and Matilda of Touraine, one of ten children, of whom one was Odo II, duke of Burgundy.  She married William/Guillaume VII, lord of Montpellier in 1156, but she continued to be known as duchess from her birth, according to usage of the time (HGL 3.801, bk 18, ch 28).  Her brother, Henry, bishop of Autun, was present at the marriage.  William died in 1172.  They had nine children:  Sibylle, who married Raymond Gaucelm of Lunel; William VIII of Montpellier; another William,* who died between 1171 and 1180; Gui de Montpellier, born 1160, called Gui Burgundion after his mother and to distinguish him from his uncle Gui Guerrejat; Raymond, who became a Cistercian monk, then bishop of Lodève, and later bishop of Agde; Guillemette de Montpellier, who married Raymond of Roquefeuil-Anduze; Azalais or Adelaide; Marie; Clémence, who was for some time a nun, but in 1199 married Rostaing of Sabran, constable of the count of Toulouse.
