Gerberga of Arles
Overview
Biography
Gerberga/Gerberge was a daughter of Geoffrey I, joint count of Provence with his brothers, and Etiennette.1 Gerberga succeeded her brother Bertrand as countess of Arles, lower Provence, which she brought to her marriage with Gilbert/Gerbert I, viscount of Millau and Gévaudan. They had two daughters, Douce, who married Raymond Berengar III of Barcelona and Etiennette/Stephanie, who married Raymond des Baux. Gilbert, who had distinguished himself in the taking of Jerusalem, died c. 1108 and Gerberga inherited his lands. In 1112, she passed on most of her lands and his to their daughter Douce. Etiennette received some lands in Provence which became known as the Baucenque or Baussenque lands, so-named for her husband. The inequality of the inheritance led to fighting between the houses of Berengar and Baux after the death of Douce.
