Emma of Mortain
Overview
Biography
(See also Genealogical Table(s): 5, 6.)
Emma was the daughter of Robert of Mortain (brother of Odo, bishop of Bayeux and uterine brother of William the Conqueror, who appears in the Bayeux tapestry and was present at the battle of Hastings), and Mathilda of Montgomery, daughter of Roger, first earl of Shrewsbury. She married William IV of Toulouse and they had a daughter, Philippa, who married William IX of Aquitaine. William IV had been married before and had two sons, but they predeceased him, so Philippa was his heir. Her son, William X, was the father of Eleanor of Aquitaine.
