Biography
(See also Genealogical Table(s): 2.3, 2.4.2.)
Mathilde was the daughter of Mathilde of Boulogne and Henry I, duke of Brabant. An older sister was Maria, the empress of Otto IV. Mathilde married Henry of Brunswick, count palatine of the Rhine in 1212. He died in 1214; there was no issue from the marriage. At the end of that year, Mathilde married Floris IV, count of Holland (+1234), with whom she had five children: William II, Count of Holland, (+1256); Floris of Voogd (+1258, regent of Holland, 1256-58); Adelaide/Aleide of Holland (+1284, regent of Holland, 1258-63); Margaret (Countess of Henneberg, +1277); Mechtild. Mathilde made several gifts to her daughter Margaret, as well as to monasteries, churches, and the Beguines. After Mathilde’s death, her daughter, Adelaide/Aleide of Holland, had to sell lands to the abbot and convent of Park, to pay her mother’s debts (#1540, November 25, 1270).
